“There’s not enough ale in the world to deal with this,” Rand al’Thor chuckles ruefully at the start of the Wheel of Time season three trailer—and from the looks of what’s to come in the Prime Video fantasy series, he may be right. There are armor-clad battles, violent magical turmoil within the Aes Sedai, Moiraine Damodred ruefully predicting her own death, and an awful lot of side-eye from scheming, seductive Dark One disciple Lanfear. Look out!
That’s really only a small selection of what you can glimpse in this action-packed trailer, which showcases all the returning characters as well as some new ones (yes, Expanse fans, that’s Shohreh Aghdashloo bringing her smolder to the proceedings), and hints at a season that’ll once again send the main characters on wildly divergent paths. The season two finale nudged the fate of Rand al’Thor ever-closer to his destiny at the Last Battle, but it’s yet to be seen if this season of Wheel of Time will actually get us there. (So far, there’s been no word of a fourth season—so let’s hope a satisfying ending is in the cards no matter what.)
Here’s the official synopsis for season three: “After defeating Ishamael at the end of Season Two, Rand reunites with his friends at Falme and is declared the Dragon Reborn. But in Season Three, the threats against the Light are multiplying: the White Tower stands divided, the Black Ajah run free, old enemies return to the Two Rivers, and the remaining Forsaken are in hot pursuit of the Dragon… including Lanfear, whose relationship with Rand will mark a crucial choice between Light and Dark for them both. As the ties to his past begin to unravel, and his corrupted power grows stronger, Rand becomes increasingly unrecognizable to his closest allies, Moiraine and Egwene. These powerful women, who started the series as teacher and student, must now work together to prevent the Dragon from turning to the Dark… no matter the cost.”
Prime Video shared a press release that further notes season three is mostly based on the fourth book in Jordan’s series, The Shadow Rising, and that it “will take viewers to many new regions and cities across the fictional continent of the Westlands, including the vast deserts of the Aiel Waste, the intoxicating and dangerous port city of Tanchico, and the forbidden and fog-shrouded ancient city of Rhuidean, where Rand and Moiraine will both experience life-changing revelations. Meanwhile on the other side of the world, in Rand’s small hometown of Two Rivers, his lifelong friend Perrin Aybara will also embark on a personal journey, one which will change him forever.”
The Robert Jordan-penned novels were adapted for TV by executive producer and showrunner Rafe Judkins. The cast includes Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, Daniel Henney as Lan, Josha Stradowski as Rand, Zoë Robins as Nynaeve, Madeleine Madden as Egwene, Marcus Rutherford as Perrin, Dónal Finn as Mat, Ceara Coveney as Elayne, Kate Fleetwood as Leandrin, Natasha O’Keefe as Lanfear, Ayoola Smart as Aviendha, Kae Alexander as Min, Sophie Okenedo as Siuan Sanche, and Shohreh Aghdashloo as Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan.
The Wheel of Time returns for season three March 13 on Prime Video. The first three episodes will drop together, with a weekly drop to follow until April 17.
